An Introduction to Statistical Problem Solving in Geography Workbook

dark green and white font-04.png

With the release of the 4th edition of my textbook An Introduction to Statistical Problem Solving in Geography, I created a corresponding workbook containing student laboratory exercises, in addition to other course materials.  These are the same materials and exercises I use in my class.

Many have expressed an interest in the data used in An Introduction to Statistical Problem Solving in Geography.  Therefore, I have put together many of the different data sets so that instructors can recreate some of the examples in their courses. The data include (simply click on the hyperlink to download the data):

Word document of table data.  A Microsoft Word document that includes data from Tables 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.5, 3.1, 5.1, 5.8, 10.4, 10.6, 10.8, 11.3, 12.5, 12.7, and 17.5

Excel Spreadsheet of Geographic Data.  An Excel spreadsheet that includes numerous examples of geographic data used throughout the book including Harvest Data (latitude/longitude, yield); labor participation rates for MDC and LDC; farm samples with latitude/longitude, P and K values); last spring frost data with latitude/longitude, lsf value, elevation, and distance to coast; 2020 US Obesity rates (latitude/longitude, name, obesity, and sample size); 2019 life expectancy from birth (country name, age); per-capita health expenditures (country name, country code, per-capita expenditure).

City of Toronto geographic data as Esri Shapefiles, including fire, police, voting locations, and schools.

County population data.  Includes an Esri Shapefile with associated data used in the textbook (population 2010, population 2020, population percent change, covid deaths).

In order to help faculty members using my book to get their courses up and running as quickly and painlessly as possible, I am happy to provide you with my lecture notes (PowerPoint presentations), answer keys to the workbook exercises, and other course material.  To obtain my course materials for you use, email me using your campus email address, and I will send you a link to the materials.

In addition to the free materials, I also have a 13-hour Udemy video series of my lectures entitled Statistical Problem Solving in Geography where I walk through each chapter of my book and also perform demonstrations of statistical analysis using Excel, ArcGIS, and other software products.  This is one of the highest rated courses on Udemy, and is used by thousands of students around the world.  My students enjoy these videos as they can refer back to them to reinforce the material we discuss in class.

Also, the video demonstrations are a good way to help them remember how to use the software to run the different statistical tests, even when I'm not around!!  And if you find yourself away at a conference, you can use the videos as an out-of-class assignment.  The video course is ordinarily $24.99.

Do not purchase this course!!  If you are a faculty member using my book, I want to provide you with a free version of the materials for your review (please note, Udemy only allows me a few opportunities to do this each month, so you may have to wait a few days for me to get the free coupon code generated).  If you think your students would like access to the video lectures, I can make them available for under $10 - a great value, as they can keep the videos forever.  I usually do this at the beginning of each semester.  So, please let me know if you would like to use the material, and I will send you a discount code.
